The state of plane strain can be described by
the following two basic equations. (Concept & derivation is similar to that
in stress transformation and the equations are also similar. For

Note the similarity between equations (A) & (H) and equation (B) and (I).
With equation (H) & (I) defined, equations involving principal normal
strains, principal shear strain and the associated normal strain, and the angles
of these principal planes can be derived. (For
